Abstract

This  thesis  is of  three respects :- 1) to study of teaching of Sīla in the Path of Purification (Vissuddhimagga) 2) to study of teaching of Sīla in the Path of Freedom (Vimuttimagga) 3) to compare the teaching of Sīla in the Path of Purification (Vissuddhimagga) and  the Path of Freedom (Vimuttimagga).

From the research, it is found that
Sīla in the Vissuddhimagga means behavior which was well controlled. That is the complete control of the body and the words, and the support of the meritorious action. The concept is the intention, the mental concomitant, the restraint and the non transgression. The Characteristic is to control the behavior.  Function is to eliminate the wrong Sīla. The consequence is a clean facility, a clean speech, and clean mind.  The standard is conscience (Hiri) which is moral shame to do all evils, and having moral dread (Ottappa). The essences are the four moralities of pure conduct (Pārisuddhi-sīla), 1) Pātimokkhasaṃvara-sīla means restraint in accordance with the monastic disciplinary code, 2) Indriyasaṃvara-sīla means restraint of the six senses, 3) Ājīvapārisuddhi-sīla means purity of conduct as regards livelihood, and 4) Paccayasannissita-sīla means pure conduct as regards the necessities of life. By the way, the first point is raised by faith or confidence, the second is raised by mindfulness, the third is raised by effort, and the fourth is raised by wisdom.
But, Sīla in Vimuttimagga means calmness, goodness, excellence, action, normality, and the natural state of happiness and suffering which means head, calmness, and peace. The normally it means intention, refrain, and the non transgression. Characteristics are the omissions of the depreciation in the value.  The impairment of the value means the violation of Sīla. That is to restraint in accordance with the monastic code of Sīla, which means the decline of faith in the Buddha because of non bashfulness (shamelessness) and fearlessness (lack of moral dread). The violation of conduct in connection with the necessary things of life, means the loss of solitude (satisfaction in factor), and the violation of discipline regarded sense restraint. This means the omission of the proper attention it is, because composed of the six non organics. The function is the joy and the pleasurable mental feeling. The consequence is of no remorse (and it does not trouble the mind). The standard is right conduct of the three doors or avenues of action, such as the body, the speech, and the mind, and is composed of all the sense faculties. The essences are the four moralities of pure conduct (Parisuddhi-sīla) as the same of Visuddhimagga.
