Abstract

The research, “A Study of Practical Method and Results of Meditation Practice of Meditators at Wat Trisigkhathalamalataram, Khamtakla District, Sakonnakhon Province” was done with three main purposes: to study principles and methods of practicing meditation in Theravãda Buddhism, to study the methods of practicing meditation at Wat Trisigkhathalamalataram, Khamtakla district, Sakonnakhon province, and to study the results of practicing meditation done by the meditators at

Wat Trisigkhathalamalataram, Khamtakla district, Sakonnakhon province.

A result of this study dealt with both a qualitative and quantitative research in order to collect data by the open-end structural questionnaire and interview. The statistics used in this research study was t-test and described a result with averages and description in separated groups: monks, teachers, students, and parents. Each of them was 20 persons in order.

A result of this research was found that the Buddha divided the principle of meditation into two kinds: tranquility meditation--to make mind calm and insight meditation-to purify mind with wisdom to understand Three Characteristics of all component things. This insight meditation was seen only in Buddhism. The principle of Four Foundations of Mindfulness was recognized as the insight meditation to understand clearly a body and mind. The cessation of defilement was consisted of Ãtãpi-great effort to burn defilement by practicing meditation continuously, Satimã-being mindful of a body and mind, Sampajãno-consciousness of a body and mind, and Ãnãpãnasati-samãdhi-a practical method to make mind calm or to follow a practical way of Four Foundations of Mindfulness. This method was both the tranquility and insight meditation.  Ãnãpãnasati was a way of the enlightened one’s life. The practice of meditation in Visuddhimagga was full of morality, concentration and wisdom that were really about Pariyatti, Patipatti, and Pativedha in Budhdhism-attainment of Jhãna, Magga, Phala and Nibbãna.

All methods of practicing meditation at Wat Trisigkhathalamalataram taught by Ven. Phra Sompob Jotipañño were taken from Tipitaka and Visuddhimagga. As a monk of wisdom and morality, he followed greatly Four Foundations of Mindfulness and Contemplation of breathing. The applied Buddhist principles were clear with a concrete meaning that the new meditators, especially the teenagers could make it easily by contemplating the breathing in and out, being mindful of the recent feelings, and then, taking these methods to the daily life. A result of practicing meditation was different about sex, age, education, and occupation. Someone came without faith and did not learn what the meditation was. After practicing the meditation, there was great development of mind with stable emotions, calm mind, consciousness of studying, gratitude to the parents, and more faith in Buddhism.

A result of practicing the meditation done by a target group of people was found that after practicing the meditation, there was great development in various aspects: mental health, morality, family, society, and faith in meditation to grow mindfulness. Moreover, all of them were optimistic about Buddhism and could this method applied to the qualitative development of life, clear consideration before decision, and reasonable solution of all problems. This result of practicing the meditation had the effect on mind was well. Those people believed greatly in the law of action: “good action produced goodness; bad action produced badness”. They feared unwholesomeness, respected to the old people, and had gratitude to the parents and teachers. After practicing the meditation, the groups of teenagers had more love towards people in the world. When the comparison was done, the satisfaction was in a high level by collecting data from the parents of students that all students were more conscious of a body and speech, and were responsible for their education and homework.
