Abstract

                    The objective of this thesis is to study and analyze about the history and the intention of the third precept, to study the results of violating the third precept and to study the advantages of the third precept in Theravāda Buddhism

                 The result of the study has shown that the intention of the third precept is to be the standard for social living in Humanity, which is hoped to prevent the disunity in one’s family. In ruling the third precept was base from the undesirable behavior from both men and women which causes the fight and can damage the person.

                 The feature of violating the third precept is that violating all relating to the lust between men and women who are not their husband or wife. The result of violating the third precept is that the precept will be absent from the person, will be broken and sinful. The penalty of the person who violates the precept is that the person will go to hell, his/her family will be broken and unhappy and he/she would not be accepted in the society.

 

                 The advantages of the third precept in Practicing the third precept is that the person will not lose their possessions and will be praised by others people. The advantage of the third precept to their family is that the family will have a happy marriage between husband and wife, the family living happily. The advantage of the third precept to the society is that it will make the society more peaceful and have less harassing and raping.

                 In conclusion, violating the third precept will give the direct disadvantage to husband and wife and also their family and society. The people who violate the precepts will lose their possessions, have bad reputation and will not be praised by others. So people should not violate the third precept to reduce the problem of getting divorce, and having broken family.
