: A Study of the Sangha Roles in Ethical training for Youth in Bangkruay District, Nonthaburi Province

Abstract

                   The main objectives of this research were i) to study the opinions of guardians, youth and Buddhist monks towards the Sangha roles for ethical inculcation in Bangkruay District, Nonthaburi Province; and ii) to study the problems and suggestions for the improvement of youth ethical inculcation. The survey research was carried out in this study. A group of samples for this study consisted of 90 guardians, 90 youth and 20 Buddhist monks, totaling 200 in number, being drawn by simple random sampling technique. The tool for data collection in this research was questionnaire divided into three parts, namely, part 1: information of guardians, part 2: information of youth, and part 3: information of Buddhist monks. The programme for social science research was employed for data analysis. The statistics used for it are frequencies, percentage, average means and standard deviation. The data analysis was also done through t-test for testing the hypotheses in order to test the average difference between the two groups and f- test by one-way analysis of variance (One-way ANOVA) and Least Significant Difference : LSD) were used for testing the difference between the averages from three or more groups.

 

 

 

 

The findings of Research were concluded as follows:

              Guardian Group

              Majority of respondents were female, aged between 31-40 years. Most of them completed Bachelor degrees onwards, worked in private sectors with monthly income between 2,000-3,000 Baht and got married.

              The overall opinions of guardians towards the Sangha roles in youth ethical inculcation in aspects of leadership, Dhamma propagation, educational administration, and administrative, constructive and ecological knowledge were found at the high level.  Having considered by each aspect, it was also rated at the high levels in all aspects.

              Youth Group

              Majority of respondents were male, aged 17 years. Most of them studied in higher secondary schools/vocational education, ever participated in Buddhist activities with frequencies of their participation ranging 5-10 times per year.

              The overall opinions of youth towards the Sangha roles in youth ethical inculcation in aspects of leadership, Dhamma propagation, educational administration, and administrative, constructive and ecological knowledge were found at the high level.  Having considered by each aspect, it was also rated at the high levels in all aspects.

                  Buddhist Monk Group

              Majority of respondents aged between 31-40 years with less than 5 years living in Bangkruay District. Most of them were temple living monks and completed the highest level of Dhamma Studies with 1-5 years of monkhood.

              The overall opinions of Buddhist monks towards the Sangha roles in youth ethical inculcation in aspects of leadership, Dhamma propagation, educational administration, and administrative, constructive and ecological knowledge were found at the high level.  Having considered by each aspect, it was also rated at the high levels in all aspects.
