A Study of Morals in the Khmer Language Sermon of Phrakhru Pisarnthammakoson (Panon Papanyo) in Surin Province

Abstract

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this thesis were: 1) to study the story of Teachings in Surin Khmer Dialect 2) to study the Moral Principle of Teachings in Surin Khmer Dialect, and 3) to study the way of applications of the Moral Principle of Phrakhrupisanthammakosol (Sanon  Sapanyo) ’s Teachings in Surin Khmer Dialect for daily life.  The researcher studied data from Tipitaka, Commentaries, and related research reports, and interviewed the monks who had experiences of teaching in the dialect. Then the researcher analyzed the collected data and summarized in descriptive explaination.   The findings of research are as follows;

The story of Teachings in Surin Khmer Dialect was found that Surin Khmer dialect was the origin of folk literature and the tales inherited by hearsay. There were many written literatures such as Khoi Book literature, palm leaves literature, and stone inscription. These literatures were divided into several types such as literature on religion, literature on belief, literature on exaggerated tales, and literature on legend, etc.   Buddhist monks favor to preach in Surin Khmer dialect which was normally used in the community. The Khmer language was one of the written languages which had been studied by Buddhist monks along with Thai language because the chants and the teachings were mainly inscribed in Khmer language. The preaching in the dialect was the usage of certain languages the communities which had the different characteristics in tone and sentence from standard language. But the mentioned differences remained in the same language. It was the person based and Dhamma based in technique of preaching. It made clear explanation to those who used to listen to. It gave the right way to those who were studying Dhamma. It responded to the Sangha’s affairs in administration, dissemination, and technique of dissemination which were in accordance with the Buddhist method of communication i.e. elucidation, inspiration, encouragement, and gladdening.

 The Moral Principle of Teachings in Surin Khmer Dialect was found that the teachings was prominent in language usage i.e. concise, clear, and easily to understand. There were the citations of Buddhist proverbs, illustration, storytelling, comparison with metaphors, and personalization. The Buddhadhammas presented were the simple things and around the people, clear, and without the ambiguity such as the human values which supported the human happiness. It could be said that the Buddha was humanist according to the Theravada Buddhist philosophy. The Theravada Buddhist philosophy presented two issues of humanism; that was to deny extolling the sacred things and the views about globe and life.

The way of applications of the Moral Principle of Phrakhrupisanthammakosol (Sanon  Sapanyo) ’s Teachings in Surin Khmer Dialect was found that the application could be used in daily life. Most of the teachings were emphasized on a precept, meditation, wisdom, donation, and gratitude which were the important foundation of Buddhism. And they lead young and old people to refine their mind and let them live permanently in morality. He completely followed the Buddha’s teachings. Hi was good example of goodness and gratitude, and devoted himself to the nation, the religion and the king with hardworking, honesty, patience and sacrifice which were beneficial to society in terms of donation, taking precepts, and mind development according to Buddhism.
