Abstract

Abstract

This thesis has three objectives; to study the doctrine and dhamma taught in Bhāvanā Sutta, to study the Insight Maditation Practice in Theravāda Buddhist Scriptures and to study the Insight Maditation Practice as taught in Bhavana Sutta. Clarified data are taken from the Theravada Buddhist scriptures and other related documents, then composed, summarized, analyzed, explained in details, corrected and verified by Buddhist scholars. From the study it found that;

Bhāvanā Sutta is mentioned in two places, the first sutta is in Saṃyuttanikāya Mahāvāravakka, concerned with the Foundations of Mindfulness which are the contemplation of body, the contemplation of feeling, the contemplation of mind, and the contemplation of mind-objects, with effort Sampajañña and Sati for elimination of covetousness (Abhijjhā) and displeasure (Domanassa).  The second Sutta is in Angkuttaranikāya Sattakanipada, descriptive phase and comparing form. When meditation is done again and again, defilement will be away and Saṃyojanas will be eliminated.

The the Insight Maditation Practice in Theravada Buddhist stated the dhamma principles composed of Ᾱtāpī, knowing oneself, Sampajano, the recollection of the present temperament, Satimā, having continuous mindfulness in Satiphaṭṭhāna Bhāvanā. Sati is the subject of the Four Foundations of body, feeling, mind and mind-objects. Then causing the Vipassanā Ñāṇa in enlightening of the dhamma state which is the emotion from body, mind or form and name as they really are till realization of the impermanence, suffering, non-self, without animal, person, man or woman, nothing  beautiful, nothing quite, then craving and clinging both form and name will be extinguished. Mind will be purified and away from all defilements.

The way of Insight Meditation Practice in Bhāvana Sutta has the Foundation of Mindfulness in four bases namely; (1) Kāyānupassanā Satipaṭṭhāna  is the way of purifying, suited for light Tanhā Carita, light Samathayānika
(2) Vedanānupassanā Satipaṭṭhāna is the way of purifying, suited for strong Taṇhā Carita, strong  Samathayānika (3) Cittānuppassanā Satipaṭṭhāna is the way of purifying, suited for light Diṭṭhi Carita, light Vipassanāyānika (4) Dhammānupassanā Satipaṭṭhāna is the way of purifying, suited for strong Dhitti Carita, strong Vipassanāyānika. Without these four foundations nobody attains dhamma.
