Abstract

Abstract

The thesis entitled “An Analytical Study of Buddhist Principles in the Development of Children of Child Health Promotion Demonstration Unit, Faculty of Nursing, Chiang Mai University” has three objectives: 1) to study the Buddhist Principles in the development of Children in line with Buddhism, 2) to study the promoting roles in the development of children of Child Health Promotion Demonstration Unit, Faculty of Nursing, Chiang Mai University, and 3) to analyze the application of Buddha-dhamma in the development of children of that place.

From the study of the first aim, it can be found that Buddhist Principles or Buddha-dhammas can be used to promote child development in physical, emotional, social and intellectual. It also resulted in children to be with loving kindness and moral ethics for their fellow humans and even animals. The application of Buddha-dhamma in parenting children is vital, enabling children to develop their behaviors for the better both physically and mentally. Parents should focus on the child grow into a good person or moralist, not only a wise man. Sometimes one is a wise man, but evil spirit, also dangerous to themselves and others. The ethics instilled in children is the foundation of life. Buddha-dhammas used to promote child development are Ti-sikkhā (Threefold Training), Brahmavihāra (Holy Abiding), Sangahavatthu (Bases of Social Solidarity), Pañca-sila (Five Precepts), and Disā (directions).

From the study of the second aim, it can be seen that various activities have been held under the objectives of the Child Health Promotion Demonstration Unit. This helps the child development in four aspects: physical, emotional, social and intellectual. Planning, screening and prompting for children with developmental delays is functioned by DSI (Developmental Screening Inventory). These are for children with a developmental age, for children receiving food according to age properly, for children growing so happily with warm both body and mind, for behaving as a role model to children; training children to sacrifice and to appreciate the good deeds of others, reminding not blocking the right thing, learning more by reading books and researching on the Internet, for children doing a variety of activities in line with the development of the above-mentioned four aspects. Besides, Moral and Ethics cultivation is the foundation of one’s life for the development of the country.

From the study of the last aim, it can be said that fathers and mothers having primary responsibility for the upbringing and parenting children must be qualified: having a well-equipped goodness, behaving themselves as a good model, encouraging children to grow happily with physical and mental health. This is because parents are the foreground with the significance, having nourished a child from birth. Buddhist Principles or Buddha-dhammas can be used to promote child development in physical, emotional, social and intellectual are: Ti-sikkhā :Threefold Training; the attitude must be based on fact, children are encouraged to think of the principles of cause and effect, can solve problems and can decide correctly, with intelligence as fact. Brahmavihāra: Holy Abiding; consisting of Mettā having a love of their sons and daughters, Karunā: Compassion; having a passion for their children, Muditā: having sympathy for their children and Upekkhā: Equanimity; caring for their children with peace of mind. Sangahavatthu: Bases of Social Solidarity; having verbal and physical conduct relating to society, not making yourself and others suffer. Gharāvāsa-dhamma: Virtues for a good household life; promoting and teaching children by ways of acting honestly. Pañca-sila: Five Precepts; teaching children to abstain from killing, to abstain from stealing, to abstain from sexual misconduct, to abstain from false speech, and to abstain from intoxicants causing heedlessness. Last, Disā: directions; teaching children to realize their roles and duty towards the society. It is clear that the Buddha-dhamma can undoubtedly promote the development of children of that place.
