Abstract
This research contains 3 main objectives; 1) to study the enlightenment in Theravada Buddhist scriptures, 2) to study those who entered in divine planes and 3) to study the enlightenment of those who entered in divine planes by collecting research data form the primary resources of Theravada Buddhist scripture as well as other related documents, summed up, analyzed, composed in descriptive style, finally verified by experts. It is a documentary research.
The findings revealed that the enlightenment refers to the liberation by entering into 9 transcendent states, complete realizing the four noble truths through cultivating the Four Foundations of Mindfulness until the insight knowledge occurs, leading the mind of practitioners to become Noble One among these nobilities; Sotāpanna, Sakadāgāmī, Andāgāmī and Arahanta. The enterer into divine planes signifies those who have been reborn in heaven as Upattideva or deities by sudden rebirth. Their subtle bodies are desired, attractive and enjoyed with pleasurable objects, full with divine happiness and properties beyond human realm. Due to such pleasures, deities often loss their mindfulness, living with heedlessness when being overwhelmed by griefs and sorrows from fears of death and departing from divine properties. These deities can attain enlightenment by listening Dhamma then following the principle of Four Foundation of Mindfulness, observing the states of mental objects continuously along with contents of teaching. This will cause the rise of insight knowledge in gradual advance until realizing four noble truth quickly because deities possess the subtle bodies different from human plane in which insight practice depends on flesh bodies as the bases of mindfulness practice before.
