A Study of the Four Modes of Practice (Patipadā) Effecting to the Insight Meditation

Abstract

                 This research paper contains the following purposes; to study the 4 modes of practice or Paipadā in Theravada Buddhist scripture and to study 4 modes of practice effecting to the insight meditation by collecting data from the resources of Theravada scripture and other concerned documents, summarized, analyzed and composed by the inscriptive style, finally checked by experts. The findings were that;

                 Four modes of practice refers to the way or code of spiritual training for final liberation composing of;1) Dukkhāpaipadā Dandhābhiññā is the practical way of those who had desired character with weak faculties and getting through lower insight knowledge hardly and entering the high insight knowledge hardly too called Neyyapuggala, 2) Dukkhāpaipadā Khippābhiññā signifies to those who get through lower insight knowledge hardly but entering the high insight knowledge quickly called as Vipacitaññūpuggala, 3) Sukkhapaipadā Dandhābhiññā refers to a practice of those who get through the lower insight meditation  easier and attaining the high insight  called Vipacitaññūpuggala and 4) Sukkhapaipadā Khippābhiññā belongs to practical way of those who get through the lower insight knowledge easily and attaining the higher insight knowledge quickly called Ugghaitaññū.

                 The 4 modes of practical way affecting to insight meditation as followings; the first mode belongs to contemplation on body in Four Foundations of Mindfulness or the 1-4 Ānāpānasati but the practitioner must increase more mindfulness faculties in order to abandon the derangement on beauty, example in this case is Cakkhupalathera, the second belongs to contemplation on feeling and

Ānāpānasati and the practitioner needs increasing more concentration faculties to abandon the derangement on happiness seen in the case of Tissathera, the third fits to those who develop contemplation on mind or 9-12 Ānāpānasati and increase more the effort faculties to abandon the derangement on permanence, for example in the case of Julapanthakathera, the forth mode belongs to those who develop contemplation on mind-objects or 13-16 Ānāpānasati to abandon the derangement on self, with perfect faculties, easy practice but quickly realizing, not depending on other principle but only Noble Truth, able to attaint enlightenment, an example is seen in the case of Bahiyathera etc.
