Abstract

Abstract

This research contains 3 main objectives; 1) to study the Byāpāda or ill-will found in Theravada Buddhist scriptures, 2) to study the story and feature of novelentitled “Boung” and 3) to apply the Buddhist virtues found in the novel “Boung”for daily life. It was a documentary research by collecting research data from the primary sources of Theravada Buddhist scripture, novel entitled “boung”other related documents, summed up, analyzed, composed in descriptive style, finally verified by experts. The findings of study were as follows;

The ill-will or Byāpāda in Buddhism refers to malevolence, hatred, aversion. The ill-will was caused by grating, dissatisfaction that is hatred which is a root cause of unwholesome consciousness functioning tie up the anger with troublesomeness and revenge to the opposed. It was one among the 10 paths of unwholesome deeds resulting mental frustrations and heat like burning fire, ever being painful. If one dies with strong ill-will, he will be reborn only in the plane of loss and woe.

The main feature of Boung novel revealed that it represented the leading character named “Paeng spirit” who holds grudge against others because she wanted superior position in family as well as theemotional love from her husband as the housewife in previous life.  The main contents focused on real situations of women in society which were determined by social contexts and value without choice later causing unfairness and ill-will with her husband and other ladies. Finally,she realized the realities and disadvantages of ill-will then abandoned her ill-will with sincere forgivingness to all.

The virtues found in Boung novel which can be applied in daily life were;
1) Buddhist five precepts, 2) non-hatred, 3) mindfulness, 4) loving-kindness,
5) doctrine of household life, 6) moral shame and dread, 7) 4 foundations of mindfulness. These virtues, according to Buddhism were the foundational virtues, that is to say, the Buddhist five precepts which are supportive and encouraging the life development and the ending up of hatred and aversion, thereforeone must observe five precepts,trying to be aware of all mental objects and cultivating loving-kindness by forgivingnesshabituallyto prevent the rise of hatred.
