Abstract

This dissertation entitled ‘The Concept of Fraternity in Buddhist Philosophy’ has three objectives: 1) to study the concept of fraternity, 2) to study the concept of fraternity in Buddhist philosophy, and 3) to critically analyze the concept of fraternity in Buddhist philosophy. This is a documentary research.

In the research, it was found that the concept of fraternity basically refers to the way by which human being treats each other as if they become a brotherhood because of human beings’ birth based on fraternity. All of human beings are from the same birthplace that is Brahman heaven; therefore, they should treat each other like fraternity. In other words, human beings should act towards one another on the basis of fraternity through practicing. In point of view of Buddhist Philosophy, all human beings are by nature selfish. Despite the mentioned fact, many problems such as conflicts and anger can be gradually reduced by treating each other with sympathy, loving kindness and good friendship and thereby attaining the universal humanhood. Consequently, by virtue of those practices, happiness, justice and fraternity can be actualized

In Buddhist philosophy, the concept of fraternity is purposely assigned to effectively argue against the concept of selfishness wherein the virtuous way of life is missed. Only the fraternity can bring about the endless ideal life in accordance with Buddhist tenet.
