Abstract

The aim of this research study is to identify, categorize and explain the solution of the problem of English and Thai translation encountered by professional translators who live in Bangkok, Thailand and nearby areas.

In data collection, it used two parts of collection; the first is an interview with ten professional translators, the second is the study from the textbook, thesis, academic journal, and so on. Research tool used in this study is an interview form, interview question, self-introduction letter, mobile phone and recorder etc.

The results based on an analysis from the interview with ten professional translators are presented in this research. There are 1) the solutions of each translation problem, the translation confrontation and the translation strategies of professional translators served as a reference in translating English-Thai or Thai-English, 2) after studying this research, it will make us know the number of the kinds of  problems in translation, 3) the results of this study can be adopted in conducting additional studies in translation.

To solve the problem of English and Thai Translation, understanding vocabulary, idioms, language structure of sentences and technical terms is very important or necessary for translators. Professional translators must use various dictionaries, encyclopedias, academic books and documents as tools for elucidating the meaning of difficult words, idioms and expressions. They must also use the techniques of paraphrasing and transliteration.

All professional translators pointed out that translators should have both background and specialized knowledge, as well as broad knowledge relevant to the subject matter of the material they are translating. They must unceasingly read books, journals, current news reports, translated works, and so on. When they discover new words, technical terms, idioms and expressions, they should store them in a word banks for use in the future.
