Abstract

This dissertation entitled has three objectives: 1) to study the principles of being the efficient leader of an abbot in Thai society, 2) to study Buddhadhammas supporting the efficient abbot’s leadership, and 3) to propose the Buddhist integrated supportive formation of the efficient abbot’s leadership. This is a qualitative research conducted by interviewing 21 people.

In the research, it was found that according to the abbot’s principles on leadership, the abbot is efficiently supposed to administrate Sangha’s six domains of affairs (1) government (2) religious studies (3) educational aid (4) propagation of Buddhism (5) public assistance (6) public aid. In these matters, the inappropriate performance of duty such as the violation of the Order and regulations, lack of patient, stringiness, exploitation, less maturity, being not ready to change or to get thing developed including being helpless of each other may be caused.

In order to solve those problems, the Buddhadhammas are required by the efficient abbot: 1) four sublime states of mind, loving kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity, 2) four paths of accomplishment, will, energy, thoughtfulness and investigation. By virtue of these virtues, one can apply into his performance of duty so that the assigned affairs can be effectively accomplished.

As far as the Buddhist integrated formation supporting the efficient abbot’s leadership is concerned, it can be divided into two dimensions: 1) in being leadership: the abbot should possess loving kindness wishing Buddhist monks and general people a happy life, following virtue of compassion, he provides a certain help to liberate those in need from problems and suffering, when it comes pleasant situation, he really expresses his agreement to those who get successfulness and he should hold the neutrality without any bias when faces one who did wrong doing, 2) in the effectiveness of performing duty: the abbot should endlessly love performing his assigned duties in order to provide the benefit to the public through his great deal of energy, brave, enthusiasm, determined mind, devout, responsibility and careful investigation on what is strong, what is weak in order that those given works would be effectively made. Through four sublime states of mind and four paths of accomplishment the efficient abbot’s leadership can possibly integrated wherein knowledge and virtue are put together side by side while carrying out Sangha’s affairs. Under this situation the concrete effectiveness would be gradually expected.
