Abstract

This research entitled “The Guidelines Study of Buddhism Propagation for The Volunteer Monks on Highlands”. There are three objectives as follows: (1) to study the propagation background of the volunteer monks towards hill tribes on highlands, (2) to study the problems and obstacles of Buddhism propagation on highlands, and (3) to study the guidelines of Buddhism propagation for the volunteer monks on highlands.

 

This study is a qualitative research with collecting documents, primary data from Tipitaka of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University version along with exegesis (Atthakathã), bill (Dîkã) and collecting from fieldwork.

 

The propagation background of the volunteer monks towards hill tribe on highlands found that Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University focus on the importance of propagating Buddhism to hill tribes on highlands. Therefore, assigned to Chiang Mai Campus who is responsible for the implementation of the volunteer monks towards hill tribes in order to take graduate monks who graduated from university of  every campus that are Interested in propagating Buddhism on highlands. Management style has a central administration committee, a regional administration committee, a duty to prepare an annual budget plan, providing the volunteer monks, preparing the strategic plan for the implementation, promotion, supporting, supervision and following, performance evaluation of the volunteer monks from fieldwork.

 

The problems and obstacles of propagating Buddhism on highlands found that the work of the volunteers monks towards hill tribes on highlands there is a problem because applicants decrease due to other places have more motivation, but the needs of the community are increasing. The problems and obstacles of residences, lack of lodging there is not ready for the place. The area of ​​traveling is a boonies, the traveling is difficult, and the rainy season is very difficult. The communication, conversation, listening, some area of communities understands that Buddhism contraries to the way of life of the community. Going to propagate Buddhism in schools is opposed by other religious communities that has used language to communicate between monks and villagers still do not understand each other. The people who live together cannot work continuously, not working naturally. Food for consumption is lack of consumables and facilities, food problems of Thai people on highlands in the first phase of Buddhism propagation towards Thai people on highlands still do not know and understand in Buddhism, getting out to receive alms there is not anyone to offer food to monks. Seasonal weather of place problem has to rely on the villagers for living, some places for organizing the Buddhist activities far away from the communities, do not have a pavilion to use in the ceremony, summer without water. The comfortable postures are the movement, monks lack the budget for propagation, propagation work has budget problem, lack of teaching materials

 

The process of propagating Buddhism on highlands  from the beginning to the present, thus, causing various tribes to believe in Buddhism, showing themselves as a Buddhist, taking children to ordain cooperate with monks to establish the hermitage, attending religious activities, tradition and culture increasing steadily, respectively.
