Abstract

This dissertation has 3 objectives: 1) to study the use of English for propagating of Buddhism; 2) to study the problems of using English of Thai sangha; 3) to propose the guidelines to improve Thai Buddhist Monks’ English language skills for propagating Buddhism. This research is qualitative research based on documentary and in-depth interview and doing content analysis including six key informants, executives from Language Institutes, English instructors. Five professional overseas missionary monks and representatives from international meditation centers, altogether 11 people. The results of the research show that the Propagation of Buddhism of Thai Sangha in present days are very important for the stability of Buddhism. The role of Sangha can be done in various ways such as preaching, training, educating people. Whereas nowadays it has been modified to be suitable with current social conditions, which can be seen through various online social media that some Thai monks are able to propagate Buddha Dhamma in a new way, such as presenting images with Dhamma quotes, uploading videos, and sharing ideas and comments, integrating Dhamma contents to match the current situations and well utilizing the online media for more benefits.

    The new body of knowledge gained from this research are; 1) directions to developing English language skills of the Thai monks which is to adjust the attitude and creating motivation to see the importance of using English in today’s era; 2) guidelines for improving education of Thai sangha such as developing teachers and English language curriculums to be more effective; 3) guidelines for encouraging monks to see the importance of using English in order to increasing efficiency in propagating Buddhism at international level or even further; 4) allowing monks to adjust and apply teachings for self-development by using the four Iddhipadas and Threefold training principles.
