An Analysis on Philosophical Concept Appeared in the Story of the Elder Upagutta

Abstract

This research is of three objectives: 1) to study the story of the Elder Upagutta in Buddhist Texts, 2) to study the Elder Upagutta's traditional belief in Buddhist way of life. 3) to analyze the philosophical ideas on the Metaphysical and Ethical points  that appeared in the story of the Elder Upagutta. This is the Documentary Research.

The findings are that :

1)  On the evidence, The Elder Upagatta did not appeared in Tipitaka, but it was found in the latter texts such as Asokavadana and the Prathamabodhikatha. In these texts  told the role of his defeat the Mara when the King Ashoka’s  Stupa celebration.

2) On the context of the Elder Upagutta in the Buddhist way of life, it is found that whenever the Buddhists perform important rituals, they must invite the Elder Upagutta to protect those ceremonies and attain the hopefully success by handing down the tail of his invitation to conquer the Mara. Devaputtamara. It is, therefore, a tradition that invites the Elder Upagutta to protoect all important rituals  such as the Full moon Wednesday’s Alms Giving .

   3) On the philosophical concept, the metaphysical aspect was found that even though the existence of the Elder Upagatta is an abstract  and lives the life in mere  belief. But this belief depends upon the authority if the Religious Texts (Sabdapraman; the term is a reference). So the Elder Upagutta must be accept as the true person in thought and belief. On the Ethical aspect, it is found that the respect of the Elder Upagutta set the framework for Buddhists ethics, i.e., the worship and respect. This merit guides people to do good. Because worship is a merit object.

In addition, the worship of the Elder Upagutta up raises many values ​​to the family, the community, the religion and the society, on which the people apply this ethics practiced in their way of life.
