Abstract

The aims of this research were: 1) to study the dhamma principles related to relationship in Theravada Buddhism; 2) to study the relationship of the elderly and youth; 3) to analytically study the creation of relationship between the elderly and youth based on Buddhist principles. This study was carried out by means of qualitative research using the documentary research and fieldwork study in Khon Kean sub-district, Mueang district, Roi Et province. The gathered data were interpreted by the descriptive analysis.

The research results revealed that the dhamma principles related to relationship in Theravada Buddhism connect to the principles of the six directions (disa), partially the front direction (puratthimadisa), the four bases of social solidarity (sagahavatthu-dhamma) and gratitude. These dhammas related to human beings in terms of coexistence in the society, are important to hold the kindness of people, who live together and create a gratefulness for those who give them a support.

The study of the general conditions of the elderly and youth in Khon Kaen sub-district, Mueang district, Roi Et province suggested that they live in a large family and many members live together including parents, grandparents, grandmothers, grandchildren and grandchildren. Most of people are usually agricultural and mercenary workers. The elderly have a simple lifestyle. Some people have a career in hire and have financial and health problems. The youth often have extravagant living, like the competition and some get involved with drug.

From the creating a relationship between the elderly and youth according to Buddhist principles, the results show that the relationship between the elderly and the youth with different ages will change in terms of  body, mind, emotion and the society must let each party know each other's changes to have more understanding. This will cause being sympathetic and helping each other. When the elderly are good models, young people will follow. The elderly and young people live together, causing both parties to become close because of joint activities and participation in recreation activities together. This makes the youth interested in the elderly and dare to talk with. In terms of youth, when participating in activities with the elderly frequently, there is more talk to the elderly and then begin to realize the gratitude and would like to provide assistance. This is the result of having to participate in activities with the elderly more often.
