Abstract

This dissertation entitled ‘Buddhist Ways to Promote Thai Social Values’ has three objectives: 1) to study the ideas on values in Thai society, 2) to study Buddhadhammas to promote values in Thai society, and 3) to propose the Buddhist methods to promote values in Thai society. This is a qualitative research done by studying documentaries and then the synthesis of contents gained from the analysis is also made.

In the research, it was found that the ideas concerning the values in Thai society is basically derived from the culture where ways of life even social heritage adapted, improved or cultivated  by man are daily followed to progress human beings’ life and spirit through various forms of expressions, living life, usage of language, for instance. It also includes one’s belief by which he/she justifies things. Since Sukhothai periods till now, four aspects of values are found as follows: 1) moral teachings, 2) legal teachings, 3) material teachings, and 4) coordinated teachings. As far as Buddhadhammas in promoting values in Thai society are concerned, four dimensions are found as follows: 1) four virtues conducive to benefits in the present and four sublime states of mind; these are used to promote the values of moral teachings due to its availability to live life, 2) seven things leading never to decline but only to prosperity and things established by righteous people; these are used to promote legal teachings because they serve as the formation and traditional ideal, 3) three kinds of contentment and unimpeachable paths; they serve to promote material teachings due to its moderate usage leading to suitability, good and sufficiency, and 4) five precepts and six directions; they are used to promote values of coordinated teachings due to its happy co-existence with others.

So far as the Buddhist methods to promote values in Thai society go, four aspects can be concretely utilized as follows: 1) the Buddhist methods to promote values according to the principles of gratitude, 2) the Buddhist methods to promote values according to five precepts and moralities, 3) the Buddhists methods to promote values according to good actions, 4) the Buddhist methods to promote values according to generosity, and 5) the Buddhist methods to promote values according to contentment. Based on those methods, the formation, RPVAB: Model, can be made; they serve to strengthen Thai society in terms of strong-ness, security and sustainability in the following ways: 1) recognition system of values in Thai society, 2) positive attitude, 3) value awareness, 4) acceptance, and 5) behaviour modification. Through the above mentioned model, RPVAB: model, Thai values can be promoted to nurture one’s habit, new thought and planning. The guidelines to follow basic values are aimed at creating the suitability of values for Thai society to properly observe.
