Abstract  

This  research  is  of  3  objects, namely :

1.          to  study  the  development  and  the  written  manuscripts  of  Nippānnasutr  of  Lānnā  Edition.

2.          to  study  the  Buddhist  Doctrinal  Principles  appearing  in  Nippānnasutr  of  Lānnā  Edition.

3.          to  study  the  value  of  Nippānnasutr  to  the  Thai  societies.

The  said  study  is  the  research  of  the  documentary  data  appearing  in  the  Three  Baskets,  the  scripture  in  ola-leaves  and  the  concerned  researches.

From  the  research,  it  is  found  that  the  Lānnā  Nippānnasutr  Scripture  is  the  literature  developed  in  the  later  age  from  the  early  Buddhist  literature  such  as  Maṅgalatthadīpanī,  Vessantaradīpanī  and  Cakkavāladīpanī composed  by  Ven.Phra Sirimaṅgalācarya,  Jinakālamālīpakaraṇa  and  Vajirasāratthasaṅgaha  composed  by  Ven. Phra Ratanapañña  Thera,  Sāratthadīpanī  composed  by  Ven. Phra Nandācarya  and  the  other  literatures  composed  by  the  Ven. Monks  in  Lānnā. The  mentioned  scriptures  are  regarded  as  the  high  ones  which  are  sweet  in  the  beginning,  in  the  middle  and  in  the  end.

The  Nippānnasutr  of  Lānnā  Edition  is  like  the  other  Lānnā  Editions  which  reflect  the  continual  development  and  a  structure  from  one  age  to  another  with  process  of  the  inscription  with  the  Lānnā  Alphabets  (Gammuang)  with  which  the  Vinayapitaka,  the  Suttantapitaka,  the  Abhidhammapitaka  and  the  local  teaching  are  inscribed.

Nippānnasutr  of  Lānnā  Edition  shows  clearly  the  Lānnā  people’s  states  of  wisdom  which  is  clearly  the  native  people’s  civilization  in  the  point  that  the  human  beings  must  have  the  same  viewpoints  as  the  others  do,  and  teaches  the  people  to  know  and  behave  themselves  firmly  according  to  the  teaching  in  Buddhism  appearing  in  this  Nippānnasutr.  Such  the  teachings  are  the  Three  Triple  Gems,  the  three  kinds  of  teaching,  the  three  characteristics,  the  Ten  Kusalakammapathas,  the  Ten  Akusalakammapathas,  the  Three  Puññakiriyāvatthus,  the  Four  Brahmavihāras  and  the  Three  Sikkhās.  The  Doctrinal  principles  in  these  literatures  aim  at  teaching  the  people  to  practise  themselves  to  be  the  good  members  of  the  societies  in  order  to  be  in  accordance  with  the  local  customs,  ceremonies  and  cultures.

The  virtues  in  Nippānnasutr  have  been  taught  through  the  process  of  teaching  in  the  principles  which  can  be  practised  in  the  way  of  expression  and  of  quoted  novels  such  as  the  story  of  the  deity  and  the  millionaire  taught  their  daughters  etc.  The  essence  of  Nippānnasutr  mentioned  that  the  people  should  practise  the  precept,  the  Dhamma  and  should  control  their  minds  according  to  the  relationship  among  the  people.  The  principle  supporting  the  human  relationship  is  Brahmavihāradhamma  which  is  valuable  to  the  Thai  Societies,  especially  the  Lānnā  societies  which  are  of  the  4  Brahmavihāradhammas:  Mettā,  Karuṇā,  Muditā  and  Upekkhā.
