Abstract

The objectives of this thesis are to study the concepts of the health and the health-establishment procedures along with the mainstream medical science, the concepts of the health and the health-establishment procedures along with Buddhism and the application of the concepts of health and health-establishment according to Buddhism.

The research method has been classified into 2 levels namely:- the documentary research and the field research. The field research is separated into 2 groups namely:- the individual group by deeply interviewing with 9 specific key informances and the target group by deeply interviewing with head and members of commumity by which both of them are used to apply the Bhuddist concept to the health establishment.

The result of studying reveals that the mainstream medical science has conceived in term of mechanically scientific paradigm.  The personal health has been reduced only to the perfect body without infected diseases which the experts can measure in the condition of empirical method. Meanwhile, the mind, the emotion and the sense of human being are neglected completely. At present, there is a new modern concept called “holistic-health perspective” which relates together to the physical, mental, social and intellectual dimensions. However, the health establishment in the mainstream medical science is still mainly focused to physical dimension. In the mean time, the dimensions of mind, sociality and intellect are neglected by physicians, especially, the mind and the intellect are performed intangibly, because they are difficult to define their meaning and to find out the indicators.

Under the Buddhist paradigm, the health is a nature of peace normally called “Happiness” which is opposite to the suffering. The major suffering which the human beings should know is Noble Truth especially called Dukkha Ariyasacca. In the point of view of health, Buddhism shows us various descriptions of health as freedom, peace,  cleanliness and brightness. The health establishment in Buddhism is followed by Threefold Education, Eightfold Noble Path in order to acquire a complete health and to attain the enlightenment.

The studying of the application of the concept of health and health establishment process in accordance with Buddhism, many key informants show that the point of view of health has been classified into four dimensions as a physical health, a mental health, a social health and an intellectual health. The perfect health occurred from an appropriate combination of these four dimensions whereby the mental health is  most paid attention to. The perfect mental health will be positively influential to the physical health and social health. In practice, the health establishment according to the Buddhist concept is to understand and acknowledge well the nature of being, in a sufficient life style, in suitably treating the body in a morality, in mindfulness and in the imitation of good models.
