Abstract

This thesis is the analytical study of the influence and the value of  Pubbesannivāsa in Theravāda Buddhist Texts and Thai societies.  It  is of  3  objectives  namely :- (1) to study Pubbesannivāsa in Theravada Buddhist  Texts, (2) to study the principles of the Buddhist doctrines regarding  Pubbesannivāsa in Theravāda  Buddhist  Texts, and  (3) to analytically study the influence and the value of  Pubbesannivāsa in Theravāda  Buddhist  Texts  and  Thai  societies.

From the research,  it  is found that  Pubbesannivāsa in Theravāda Buddhist  Texts means the co-living in the past birth as  fathers and mothers,  sons and daughters,  teachers and students, husbands and wives, cousins and friends, bosses and servants,  Buddhist monks and laymen. There are 6 kinds of Pubbesannivāsa. They are
(1) parents and sons, daughters, (2) teachers and students, (3) husbands and wives,
(4) cousins and friends, (5) bosses and servants, and (6) Buddhist monks and laymen. All of the 6 groups were Pubbesanniv
āsa among the Buddha and different persons in the past birth in jātaka (birth story). The principles of Buddhist doctrine regarding Pubbesannivāsa in Theravada  Buddhist  Texts such as  Paticcasamuppāda are those that  lead the people concerned with re-birth again and again in Sansaravatta  including the principles of  the Buddhist doctrine such as 4 Brahmvihanras and 4 Iddhipadas  that lead the people to Nibbāna. Pubbesannivāsa is understood among  the Thai people as it  is the co-living in the past birth as husbands and wives or  a couple all of which is one  of  causes  that  harm the other  people.

Pubbesannivāsa is of the influence which is the literature model in Commentary Text composed by Ven. Buddhaghosa. This Pubbesannivāsa has influence on the literature in the Thai societies,  Pubbesannivāsa in Theravāda  Buddhist Texts is of  5 values namely :- (1) self development equipment  (2) human development equipment (3) human relationship determining equipment (4) law of action and (5) principle of creating new Pubbesannivāsa for improving the old Pubbesannivāsa. Mostly, Pubbesannivāsa in Thai  societies is of  a value as only the human  relationship  determining  equipment  and  the  law  of  action.
